Jimi Hendrix for me stood for me stood for nearly everything I believed in during my early life, growing up in Berkeley during the 60's.I remember at age thirteen having a guitar and learing to play 'Purple Haze'while sitting on Telegraph Avenue near the U of Cal at Berkeley at Suther Gate, wearing a red bandana on my head.I didn't want to play like Jimi. The entire Bay Area hippie movement,my band The Notationgs Of Soul - and everyone else - dug Jimi.He had a crossover appeal that black, white, brown and Asian adored. When Jim West asked The WSQ to do Jimi we all thought it was agood idea and I hope the many fans of Hendrix will appreciate our different approach to his music because deep down inside he was also a jazz musician. - David Murray
Experience is one of our best efforts,I was surprised that Icould still be amazed at our level of intensity and creativity.Jimi Hendrix would be proud to hear our interpretation of his classic compositions. - Oliver Lake
The WSQ had the task of resurrecting Jimi Hendrix-without duplication-which is the way that we do projects-that is to get the essence of the artist without imitation. For me,I had not estensively listened to Jimi Hendrix since the 70's. My first impression of him and of his music was of this "avant rock" musician who had taken the guitar to a whole other level. At that time,it could have been thought of as bizarre. However, after going back and listening to the music again, time made me realize how architectural, poetic, innovative and rich his compositions really were / are.Experience speaks for itself!. - Bluiett
This project was one of the most unique, creative, and powerful projects of my career. The way that we played the music presented a quiet fire and intensity that never seemed to leave the studio.Lots of intensity with less electricity! - Bruce Williams
